SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for October 26, 2023 | SaltWireCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The annual Charlottetown Y Service Club food drive drive-thru is set to take place on Oct. 28 in several P.E.I. locations.

“We do know it's a difficult time for many people. It may also be hard to donate, but with any donation, we'll be more than thankful,” he said. Before COVID, the Upper Room recruited volunteers to go door to door through Charlottetown and Cornwall to pick up donations themselves, but that has since changed. Now, people will be required to drop food stuff at different food drop-off locations, MacDonald said.

“And if somebody did want to donate, you know, vegetables or frozen products, please take it directly to the food bank and we would welcome that as well.”As for regular food bank visits, MacDonald said the numbers are going up. According to statistics by Food Banks Canada's national annual HungerCount, the number of people visiting food banks has increased by 26 per cent within the past year.

“People accessing food banks in Canada are more likely to be in the lowest income bracket and are therefore particularly affected by any increase in food prices,” the survey said.
