The alliance between Gerindra and other parties in supporting Anies Baswedan's success in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election has since shifted, especially during the recent Indonesian presidential race.

Gerindra Secretary-General Ahmad Muzani said they prefer to support young and fresh candidates to contest in the Jakarta election, which will seek a new governor for the city that will soon lose its status as the country's capital city. The new capital Nusantara in eastern Kalimantan will take over the status on Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day on Aug 17.
Gerindra and other parties parted ways with Mr Anies, with Gerindra’s chairman Prabowo and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka also participating in the presidential race held on February 14. Amid the election dispute, speculation has grown regarding Mr Anies' potential candidacy in the November Jakarta gubernatorial election with NasDem and PKS expressing their readiness to support Mr Anies.
