Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur and three of the Matildas’ biggest stars with Arsenal are heading to Melbourne for a three-game series.

Two night’s earlier, Tottenham will play Newcastle United at the MCG in what will be Postecoglou’s maiden outing in his hometown since he became manager of the English Premier League side. That May 22 game will start at 7.45pm. The Matildas have a series of friendlies in the lead-up to the Olympics starting in July, including games against China and Mexico. Catley, Foord and Cooney-Cross will be coming off an intense Women’s Super League season in England, but their involvement in the game was written into the deal to bring their club to Melbourne.

Women’s football has skyrocketed in popularity in Australia since last year’s Women’s World Cup, with memberships up 669 per cent and crowds 114 per cent on the previous year.Stephen Conroy, chair of the Australian Professional Leagues, said the games presented a golden opportunity for the best players in the A-League competitions to showcase themselves against world talent.
