The Angat Dam in the Philippines is expected to release excess water in the coming days to prevent overflowing. This comes as the dam reached its spilling level due to continuous rainfall caused by the northeast monsoon and shear line.

MANILA, Philippines — With the Angat Dam reaching its spilling level, excess water would likely be released in the coming days to avoid overflowing, the national weather bureau said on Friday. As of 8 a.m., Jan. 3, the dam's reservoir water level (RWL) was measured at 213.36 meters (m) against its normal high water level (NHWL) of 212 meters or a deviation of 1.36 m from its normal level.

Nathaniel Servando, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) chief, told The Manila Times that the continued rains on its watersheds due to the northeast monsoon or 'amihan' and shear line largely contributed in reaching its NHWL.Amihan, according to the state-run weather agency, is a season of cold, dry air and strong northeasterly winds that blow from the east while the shear line is the convergence of hot and cold air.Servando said they would start opening the control gate of Angat Dam, the main source of water supply for Metro Manila residents and irrigation needs for its adjoining provinces, once it reaches 214 m.'We will slowly release the excess water of the dam so that its impact would be hardly felt by the affected areas especially in Metro Manila,' Servando said.Meanwhile, three other Luzon dams - Ambuklao, Binga and Magat - have their control gates open to release rainwater, Pagasa's Hydrometeorology Division said.Senior hydrologist Elmer Caringal said Ambuklao dam in Benguet province has one gate unlocked and started releasing water with an outflow of 97.30 centimeters (cms). Two gates were opened at Binga dam, also in the same province, while releasing water 0.80 m, Caringal said. The Magat dam in Cagayan province has its one control gate opened while discharging water measured at 1 m or with an outflow of 392.89cms, he added
