The Andrews government will slam shut a loophole which allows taxi drivers to charge exorbitant fees when Victorians hail a cab.
Earlier this year taxi drivers were criticised when they pushed up prices and ripped off hundreds of people trying to get home from the Grand Prix and Australian Open.
However, new regulations announced by Transport Minister Ben Carroll will ensure that taxi drivers have to turn their metre on when a vehicle is hailed from the side of the road. “To make sure when you get a cab, no matter who you are or the time of the day, if it's an unbooked service, you’re at a rank or you’re hailing - the metre goes on,” he told reporters on Monday morning.
The amendments come five years after the Andrews government deregulated the industry in 2017 to accommodate Uber and other ride-share companies.
