Small, styrofoam drones are already whizzing 70 metres above homes on the outskirts of Brisbane, delivering everything from hamburgers to medicine, with industry heavyweights predicting the technology will expand deep into major Australian cities within the decade.
Jesse Suskin, head of policy at Alphabet subsidiary Wing, says drones are more likely to delivery smoothies and sandwiches than goods usually brought by delivery drivers., a subsidiary of Google’s Alphabet, preparing for the country to emerge as a key market within years. As the federal government prepares to finalise key delivery guidelines to better regulate the industry within months, the proliferation of the technology has sparked concern within the union movement about job security for transport workers.
Wing’s head of Australian public policy Jesse Suskin says the technology is more likely to replace journeys being taken by the public – to pick up a smoothie or a sandwich – rather than truck drivers or couriers, given the drone’s small delivery payload.
