A six-year repair job on the Tunnel Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine gets underway in Montreal while the premier touts plans for a new tunnel for Quebec City
Last Monday morning, Montrealers, excited by the huge media coverage, feared the worst as three of the six lanes of the Tunnel Louis-Hippolyte-Lafontaine were closed for the first day of repairs planned to last six years. Traffic to get on the island is already bad, so taking out three lanes will necessarily make it much worse, despite the transit alternatives put in place.
The closure of half the capacity of the Lafontaine tunnel will not only play on suburban Montrealers’ nerves; to avoid the traffic jams, they will make decisions that could have a significant impact on the future of industries on the island. Some will retire early. Others will look for a job in the suburbs. Others will work from home. One thing is nearly certain: few will abandon their cars.
To a Montreal driver arriving in Québec City, the traffic situation in the provincial capital appears quite benign. However, the region’s seats are crucial to Legault’s government.
