The first ever instalment of the photography festival boasts images of alternate realities, Kenyan camouflage and a cut-up Andy Warhol

Cinematic landscapes from Norwegian artist Ole Marius Joergensen’s latest series, which explores the mysteries of rural lifeMaya-Inès Touam undertakes work that is both anthropological and dreamlike, using symbolic and personal objects.

Arnold Newman is widely renowned for pioneering and popularising the environmental portrait. With his method of portraiture, he placed his sitters in surroundings representative of their professions, aiming to capture the essence of their life and work. Little known, however, are the series of innovative cut-out collages – a technique which he would revisit at several points throughout his career – the photographer began making in 1941.

The series was brought to life by Yavuz via the generative AI engine Midjourney and the Polaroid Lab. The photographs are a continuation of digital and sculptural works set in the artist’s Curse of the Forever Sultan universe, depicting an alternate reality in which the Ottoman Empire continues to exist into the 21st century as a result of the Sultan selling his soul to a djinn in 1917.

As the sole woman operating in the male-dominated commercial photography industry in Kenya, Thandiwe Muriu repeatedly confronted questions around the role of women in society, the place of tradition, and her own self-perception. These experiences inspired her Camo series, which showcases Africa’s unique mix of vibrant cultures, textiles and ideas of beauty.
