Raptors dispose of Spurs and await NBA trade deadline fate
comport themselves as a team, and some of them have had to do specifically with nights like Wednesday in mind.
Pascal Siakam set the tone with 18 points and seven rebounds in the first quarter alone, and the starting unit of Fred VanVleet, Gary Trent Jr., Scottie Barnes, Siakam and Precious Achiuwa dominated whenever they were on the court together in what added up to a relatively easy 112-98 victory. The Raptors did make minor but necessary changes to their lifestyle through the just-completed seven-game road trip. In past years, with a more veteran — and more successful — roster, they might have tried to conserve energy. There would be days off, light workouts if any at all, and maybe mornings of rest rather than hour-long shootarounds. It’d be fine for some groups, but this one needs time in the gym and consistent work.
It’s not to say the franchise made a sea change from early in the year when they’d lollygag through weeks. They did their work then; they’ve just doubled down the last little while.
