Mike Wilner: Rally Jays top Tigers in extra innings
For the sixth time in this young season, the Jays came from behind to win, and for the first time they rallied in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
They got some help after a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. single to lead off the ninth. Detroit reliever Trey Wingenter walked a man and hit another, loading the bases with nobody out. A sacrifice fly by Whit Merrifield scored one run, then Alejandro Kirk came off the bench to hit another sac fly to tie the game.
After Jordan Romano threw a hitless top of the 10th, Kevin Kiermaier executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to lead off the bottom of the frame, and George Springer singled on the next pitch to cash the winning run.Starter Kevin Gausman retired the first 10 batters he faced, and in so doing set a Jays record by not allowing an earned run over his first 15 innings of the season. The right-hander would allow three runs over eight strong innings, striking out 11 without a walk.
Immediately after, the Jays tried another double steal, this time with Daulton Varsho and Merrifield. The throw went to third and Varsho was safe, but home plate umpire Ryan Wills called himself for interference: Tigers catcher Eric Haase had stepped on his foot when making his throw. The runners were sent back.
