Leafs road trip takes another wrong turn in Los Angeles
Engvall, Justin Holl and Rasmus Sandin could be singled out for giveaways and penalties. Sandin, for example, was easily stripped of the puck by Kevin Fiala for a breakaway and the Kings’ insurance goal early in the third.
The Kings made the post-season, and play a style that flummoxed the Leafs, more of a team-first approach versus the more individualistic Leafs who rely on elite players to carry the team. Holl, the target of so much criticism lately, gave his critics more reason to complain. He took two penalties in the second that led to Kings goals. Adrian Kempe scored on a one-timer to tie the game. Then Viktor Arvidsson gave the Kings the lead, with Engvall playing the goat. His backhand pass up the middle gifted the Kings the opportunity that Arvidsson capitalized on.
“It’s always nice to try something different,” said Matthews. “They went over pretty good last year. The guys are excited to wear them.”Filip Král, a 23-year-old defenceman from the Czech Republic, saw his first game action with the Leafs, paired mostly with Mark Giordano. He got the rookie treatment, skating a warmup lap on his own before teammates joined him.
