Is this Donald Trump’s biggest rival? The rise of Ron DeSantis — a story of baseball and right-wing politics
The story of Ron DeSantis is that of the American dream of yesteryear, and of the American dystopia of today.
But that same victory set has set DeSantis on a collision course with the political force of nature known as Donald J. Trump — as many are increasingly seeing the former as someone who could threaten to overtake the latter as the Republican standard-bearer. His father installed devices for the TV ratings company Nielsen. His mother was a nurse. But Ronald Dion DeSantis was a pitching ace and a top batter who played and practised at the Jays’ stadium.
His discomfort was temporary. He studied history and joined Delta Kappa Epsilon, a fraternity that counts five former U.S. presidents among its alumni — most notable among them for DeSantis was George H.W. Bush who, like him, captained the Yale baseball team. Entitled “Dreams from our Founding Fathers,” it was a self-published takedown of then-president Barack Obama and his 1995 memoir, “Dreams from my Father.”
“This is not a guy who ever talked about running for office,” she told a TV interviewer in 2018. “Not at all.” “If we want to defeat Hillary Clinton and have a chance to change the trajectory of our country, we need to unite behind the Republican ticket this November,”Trump’s triumph shook up American politics, further polarizing and dividing the population. His election emboldened white nationalist extremists as well as their left-wing counterparts in the anti-fascist and so-called Black Bloc movements.
