Ford’s plan was to freeze the minimum wage for two years, after which it would be tied to the inflation rate, meaning an annual increase of about 25 cents an hour.Ford announced that the minimum wage would increase from $14.35 to $15 at the start of 2022. The premier also boosted to $15 the $12.55 “liquor servers minimum wage” paid to bartenders and wait staff who earn tips from their customers.
The Tories cited the pandemic for the change in policy. “This is helping wages to catch up to inflation and it’s the right thing to do,” said a senior government official, speaking confidentially in order to discuss internal deliberations.As the Opposition, the PCs railed against changes the Liberal government made to the auditor general’s office, which AG Bonnie Lysyk said reduced her office to a rubber stamp.
