Ralph Melendy was among 62 men whose remains were never recovered in the Ocean Ranger tragedy. So how his DFO registration card made it from the Grand Banks to the shores in his hometown of Lumsden remains a mystery.
That stormy Valentine’s Day night 40 years ago, Gibbons Crocker, then a young teen, had stayed at a friend’s house in Lumsden.

I can't even imagine what other families went through,” she said.“Because then it was just final. I can remember that night — everybody was just sobbing uncontrollably,” Penney Gibbons said.
“I missed out on a lot. It seems I missed out on a great man,” Cory said. ”He was very kind, a good soul who loved his family and tried his best to provide for them.” “The nickname Ocean Danger, same as everyone says,” Cory said of what his grandfather told his son Tony about life on the rig.The disaster and loss of his grandfather is in his mind whenever Cory gives safety talks to his crew.
