Jesse, who only goes by his first name, has set up a perimeter of tree branches around the tent he pitched on a University Avenue median. “There’s a lot of drugs over there, and I’m trying to stay away from them. I’m seven-years recovered addict; I haven’t drank in seven years or used in seven years.”“One guy saw me building this fence and he likes what I’m doing and he came over and helped me out. He gave me a financial blessing. He did it twice now. But some people — they drive by giving me crazy looks.”
Jesse built his fence with branches felled in the last tropical storm. “After that storm – the hurricane – my other tent was trashed. So, I had to rebuild and start again.”“There’s people who get tents so they can do their drugs and leave. I’m not one of those guys.”
