This article features an interview with Ruben Nepales, a renowned Filipino journalist, author, and photojournalist. Nepales discusses his career path, inspirations, and his dedication to promoting Filipino arts and culture.
We are fortunate to interview Ruben Nepales , an award-winning Filipino journalist, author and photojournalist. Ruben is the first and only Filipino to be elected as chairman of the board of Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) now known as Golden Globes. His first book 'My Filipino Connection: the Philippines in Hollywood' won print journalism book category at the Migration Advocacy and Media Awards.
This honor was presented by the Office of the President of the Philippines through the Commission on Filipinos Overseas. In addition to his journalistic accolades, Ruben is an award-winning photojournalist. His book Through a Writer's Lens received first prize in the non-fiction category at the 14th National Arts and Journalism Awards in February 2022. Ruben's dedication to the arts extends beyond journalism — he is founding board member of the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO). Currently, Nepales serves on the boards of the Asian World Film Festival, the SOHO International Film Festival, and the Manila International Film Festival. Here is our conversation with Ruben Nepales. What inspired you to pursue a career in journalism? I remember loving to write stories as early as grade school. I wrote them on my notebook pages and shared them with my classmates. My Mamang (mother) dreamed of being a writer but chose a more practical path and became a teacher instead. I must have inherited this passion for writing from my mother. Back in those days, people wrote long letters to friends who were far away. As a kid, I read my Mamang's letters to her friends. She wrote well. Her letters were like short stories. As a journalist and author of award-winning books, do you see yourself teaching future Filipino writers someday? What advice would you offer them? Thank you! I would love to share my insights and experiences with the next generation of Filipino writers and hopefully inspire them to soar higher
