Reports said the Sudanese military had forced Mr. al-Bashir to give up power, raising the possibility that the move was effectively a military coup, rather than a transition to a more democratic system that the protesters had sought

Sudanese sources told Reuters that Mr. al-Bashir was under “heavy guard” at his presidential residence. A cabinet minister was quoted as saying that a transitional “military council” would take power to replace the president.

A burst of gunfire on Thursday morning near the main protest site, outside the army headquarters, showed that the situation was not yet stabilized. At least one protester was reportedly injured. The source of the gunfire was unclear. A leader of the main protest organization, the Sudanese Professionals Association, told Reuters that the group would not accept a military council and wanted a civilian government with opposition figures included.
