Australian Border Force have arrested an American woman after she allegedly smuggled an unregistered gun into Sydney.

The 28-year old United States citizen travelled Down Under from Los Angeles and had no Australian firearms license, or a license to import the weapon. The gun was not loaded and ABF made no mention of ammunition being found alongside the weapon.

ABF Enforcement and Detained Goods East Commander Justin Bathurst said a combination of ABF officer skills and sophisticated detection technology helped stop the dangerous weapon from entering the community. "ABF officers are committed to protecting our community by working with law enforcement partners to prevent items like unregistered firearms getting through at the border.Following her arrest, the woman was charged with intentionally importing prohibited tier 2 goods without approval under section 233BAB of the Customs Act 1901.

She has agreed to remain at a designated address in the suburb as well as depositing the sum of $10,000 as security to be forfeited if she does not comply with the bail arrangements.ABF officials also stressed that she remains subject to visa cancellation and removal from Australia, pending the outcome of court proceedings.
