The mineworkers have been underground at a mine in Springs since Sunday, with Amcu calling this a sit-in by the miners. However, the NUM, which is the recognised union at the mine, says its members are being held hostage.

JOHANNESBURG - The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union is set to meet with GoldOne Group's management to discuss a way forward to get more than 500 miners back to the surface.

However, the National Union of Mineworkers , which is the recognised union at the mine, says its members are being held hostage. Amcu's Jeff Mphahlele said that the mine's management was refusing to recognise them even though they had been recruiting at the mine since January. GoldOne Group's chief executive officer, Jonathan Hericourt, said that while the union claims it has been recruiting, the group has not been able to verify this yet.
