The powerful Labor national executive is expected to go to a vote as the party’s Left faction tests if it has a majority and an unhappy coalition of unions makes a play for the deciding seat.but must win support from non-aligned delegates to achieve a majority on the national executive in a vote to be held at the ALP national conference in Brisbane on Friday.
“It’s a coalition of unions building on seeking more democracy within the ALP,” he said. “I’m taking nothing for granted.”Mr Marshall did not name the unions but Labor Left sources pointed to John Setka’s Victorian branch of the CFMEU as well as the Victorian branches of the plumbers union, the Health Workers Union and the Rail Tram and Bus Union.
Some Labor sources believed neither Mr Marshall nor the Labor Left was likely to have enough votes to meet the required quota for an 11th seat but noted it was unpredictable due to non-aligned delegates.
