Colder temperatures and stronger winds lead to more extreme wind chills, heightening the risks of frostbite and hypothermia.
Heat loss is sped up when temperatures are cold and winds are strong, making it feel much colder.Over the last few days, and during winter in general, there’s often lots of talk about wind chill.
Volunteers were exposed to various temperatures and wind speeds inside a refrigerated wind tunnel to simulate the effects of heat loss. Unsurprisingly, a mathematical equation takes temperature and wind speed to calculate a wind chill value, but some sources, especially private weather companies, may use a different formula to calculate a wind chill or what the temperature feels likeSo, how does wind chill affect us?
With little-to-no wind, that layer can maintain itself. However, if fierce winds are blowing, that breaks up the warm insulating layer and speeds up heat loss, which is why we feel much colder.
