A change to our weather pattern will take place later this weekend into next week. SaltWire weather specialist Allister Aalders shares what to expect with this change here in Atlantic Canada.

A change in the jet stream pattern will allow low-pressure to retrograde into the region next week.We all know that you don’t have to go far to find differences in our weather across Atlantic Canada, which has been the case over the past week or so.

The jet stream has been active as it still sits south of Nova Scotia. While temperatures have been below normal region-wide for most of this period, the storms hitching a ride along this jet have had varying impacts on the Maritime provinces while avoiding Newfoundland and Labrador altogether.First, though, low pressure is exiting the Maritimes today. Then, another system will brush western Nova Scotia with snow on Saturday.

This shift in the jet stream carries both pros and cons for Atlantic Canada. The pros? Temperatures won’t plunge again, and in fact, the mercury will be on the rise next week. The cons? While the general flow will be zonal, the jet stream will ridge northward off Newfoundland and, thanks to blocking, will keep an upper-level trough over the region and cause surface low-pressure systems to retrograde back into the region.

While it appears we will be spared any significant storms next week, this pattern sending the lows back into Atlantic Canada will keep skies relatively cloudy with flurries and showers in and out of the forecast.Send your weather photos and questions to:
