Lost in the cold was the story that several Atlantic Canadian centres just recorded their warmest January on record. It’s also no surprise that, except in Labrador, January was wetter than normal.

Above normal temperatures were recorded in almost all of Atlantic Canada in January. -Contributed/Environment and Climate Change CanadaThe cold to welcome February was a bit of a shock to the system.

The mild January led to it being the warmest on record in Halifax, Yarmouth, Sydney and Charlottetown. In Newfoundland, temperatures were roughly three to five degrees above normal and two to four degrees above normal for most of Labrador, making it the second warmest January on record in Bonavista, Port aux Basques and St. Lawrence, the fourth warmest in Stephenville and sixth warmest in St. John’s.It’s also no surprise that, except in Labrador, January was wetter than normal.

In fact, Environment Canada noted rainfall amounts were 200 to 350 per cent above normal in the Maritimes and parts of Newfoundland, while snowfall varied from 30 to 125 per cent of normal.
