A low-pressure system has developed out of energy responsible for significant weather in parts of central Canada and the U.S. over the last few days.

A low-pressure system will slowly approach and stall over the region this weekend with a sloppy mix of rain, wet snow, and wind.We are undoubtedly used to unsettled and stormy weather this time of year, but this pattern has gotten old over the last few weeks.

Unfortunately, I’m still not spotting much sunshine in the immediate forecast, and there’s a messy system en route for the weekend. There will be a chance of showers, drizzle, and flurries around Atlantic Canada ahead of the system, but more widespread precipitation will arrive in western Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Friday night into Saturday.

Precipitation will then slowly spread eastward on Saturday – reaching Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island by Saturday night and developing across Newfoundland overnight Saturday and Sunday. This is forecast to be mainly a rain event for Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, but wet snow could fall or mix with this rain at times over higher elevations.

Meanwhile, this will be a snow event for New Brunswick, except for some mixing with rain along the coast. Ten to 20 cm of snow is forecast for New Brunswick, with the likelihood many parts of that province will receive 20 to 40-plus cm. Otherwise, any slushy accumulation that parts of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland receive shouldn’t be significant.
