The Graduated Driver Licensing program was introduced in Alberta in 2003. New drivers with a learner’s, or Class 7, licence must have a fully licensed person seated next to them while driving, can’t drive between midnight and 5 a.m. and have no drugs or alcohol in their system while driving.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

Panda said an estimated 700,000 Albertans are driving with graduated licences. And in the past five years, 65 per cent of those with graduated licences did not take the second advanced road test. An additional road test will also no longer be mandatory to obtain a Class 4 driver’s licence, which is required to transport passengers in taxis, ride-share vehicles, limousines, small buses and ambulances.
