Alberta, Saskatchewan warn about impacts of insecticide ban ableg cdnpoli

They have appealed, but Alberta Agriculture Minister Nate Horner says they have gone unheard.

Nate Horner, Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation speaks at the Harmony Beef plant near Balsac, north of Calgary on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.On Jan. 26, the minister wrote federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau, as well as federal Minister of Health Jean-Yves Dulcos, to intervene on the decision and delay it until an effective alternative is more widely available.

Roger Chevraux, chairman of Alberta Canola, said a data package was resubmitted in 2021 following the ruling and standard internal deadlines should have resulted in a decision by January of this year. To this point, they have not heard anything back. This includes 4,000 residue tests completed by the Canadian Grain Commission without detectible levels of residue of lambda showing up.

This creates further complications in the importing of feed from the U.S. which is critical for producers, especially during drought years like what Western Canada has gone through. In the end, Jason Lenz, vice chairman for the Alberta Wheat Commission, warns there are significant risks to food security in Canada and globally — with Canada exporting more than 20 million tonnes annually — without the availability of this insecticide.
