“Too many decisions are being made centrally,” she said, adding she believes AHS should be focused primarily on acute care in hospitals. Services like midwifery, primary care, and continuing care could be taken out of the health authority’s umbrella, she suggested.

In response to a question from a reporter, Smith said the decision to compartmentalize AHS has nothing to do with her long-held position against COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Smith fired the governing board of AHS shortly after coming into office, hiring Cowell as the sole administrator across the province.
