Opioid deaths in Alberta are up 6.4 per cent through the first four months of 2023 versus the same time period last year.
These fatalities totalled 115, 151 and 168 for January, February and March of this year, respectively.
Through the start of 2023, about 40 per cent of Alberta’s opioid deaths have occurred in the Alberta Health Services Calgary zone, while one-in-three were in the Edmonton zone. Sixty-nine per cent of these deaths were in men, with victims most commonly falling in the 30- to 39-year-old age group. In a statement, Mental Health and Addiction Minister Dan Williams said though his UCP government has made “significant strides” on drug and addiction work, more needs to be done to support treatment and recovery. He said his government’s continued actions include building drug recovery communities across the province.
