Alberta NDP calls for committee to deal with rising rents yyc ableg abpoli
She accused the government of slashing rental subsidies over the past four years, and of making cuts to construction of new affordable housing.
Notley countered that “the government’s budget currently offers very little in the form of relief going forward. These cuts and inaction also exist alongside what I would characterize as the weakest legislative protection for renters in the country.”She said she would like to see an all-party legislative committee struck to look at options such as temporary or permanent rent caps, rent subsidies or other solutions.
The current UCP government does not have a minister directly responsible for housing. Notley said her party wrote to the premier and the minister they believe is responsible for housing to call for the committee. He also said legislation is already in place that prohibits rent increases during a fixed-term lease, and which limits rent increases during a periodic tenancy to once every 365 calendar days.
“Housing isn’t just bricks and mortar. So if we’re going to solve the housing crisis, we do need to establish a multi-pronged committee to address it.”Ron Kneebone, an economist with the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy, is a bit more skeptical on the need for any sort of committee or discussion, saying the solution is already before us.
