Leroy Newman, who farms east of Okotoks and is vice-chairman of the Alberta Barley Commission, said he is glad he has crop insurance this year because his wheat and barley crops will likely fail. “We are at such a deficit; usually we have six to seven inches in the soil ready for these droughts,” he said. “It’s just the hot and the wind. Usually when we get east winds like we’ve had, it brings in weather . . . Usually the storms come in from the east; the wind, it pushes moisture into the mountains and brings it back as thundershowers. there’s no moisture to suck up.”Article content

He said his wheat is heading out at four inches and is going to seed with a couple of kernels per stalk instead of the normal 30 or so. In a best-case scenario, his wheat will bounce back to a 50-per-cent-of-average yield while his barley will be at about 20 per cent. That’s if they get rain — and not just rain on Wednesday.
