“We have grown our party in every corner of this province,” New Democrat leader tells supporters after conceding the race to Danielle Smith’s UCP.

United Conservatives won a majority, projected to win around 51 of the 87 seats with some results still coming in. The NDP was projected to win about 36.

She thanked her candidates for their hard work and perseverance as well as her family and voters for supporting her. “This is a reflection of the leadership of Rachel Notley and her vision to build a better Alberta for everybody,” he said. “We’re in this obviously to win, but we’re also here to affect positive change, and to offer constructive criticism and to continue to build the bridges that have brought us to this point.”

Laura Penner said she believes the result puts the NDP in a strong position to hold the UCP to account. Stephen Faust, who said the greatest issue of the election for him was integrity and trust, was not optimistic about the next four years under a UCP government. “We’re definitely very polarized … I’m worried about running this province based on anger and dissatisfaction,” he said. “I am worried about the fact that you can actually win an election in this province on a promise of fighting everybody and anything.”
