A welfare advisory committee has recommended the government atone for Julia Gillard stripping single mothers of parenting payments.

A special committee established to advise the government on welfare policy before each budget is recommending Labor atone for Julia Gillard’s act in 2012 of stripping single mothers of parenting payments, sources say.

It did so by ending a grandfathering arrangement implemented by the Howard government when it stopped parents claiming the parenting payment when their youngest child turned eight. The grandfathering arrangement allowed those who were already on the payment in July 2006 to keep the payment until their youngest turned 16.

It is understood the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee is not specifically advocating a like-for-like reversal of the change, but some other support for single mothers with the aim of reversing the effect of the cut.

Albanese needs to find a Voice model ‘all Australians can agree on’Albanese needs to find a Voice model ‘all Australians can agree on’Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s celebrations over the Voice last week were “premature” as his model is currently more likely to face defeat than a landslide win at a referendum, says Sky News host Sharri Markson. 'If the Voice and Indigenous recognition in the Constitution are so deeply important to the Prime Minister, then surely he needs to do everything in his power to find a model that all Australians can agree on,' she said. 'If Albanese doesn't want a hurtful and humiliating defeat at the referendum, he needs to sit down with the Coalition, sit down with the fiercest Voice critics and find a model that's acceptable to all Australians and that both sides of politics can support. 'Because a crushing defeat at a referendum would alienate and isolate Indigenous Australians, achieving the opposite outcome of what Albanese wants.'

Greens spokesperson for housing ‘more obsessed by the politics than outcomes’: AlbaneseGreens spokesperson for housing ‘more obsessed by the politics than outcomes’: AlbanesePrime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Greens spokesperson for housing seems to be “more obsessed” by the politics than outcomes when it comes to the Housing Australia Future Fund. “All those who say they support increased investment in social and affordable housing should vote for the bill – it's as simple as that,” Mr Albanese said during a media conference on Wednesday. “I find it rather bizarre the argument that says what we want is more money, and therefore, we’ll vote for no money. “It’s up to the Greens political party to explain their position on that.”
