Mr Albanese will become the first foreign head of government to address PNG’s national parliament.
He will tell MPs Australia wants this decade to be a decisive period for peace, prosperity, unity and security in the Indo-Pacific.
“My government will continue to support programs that deepen understanding and strengthen connections between Australians and the people of Papua New Guinea.“Because at the heart of our two nations’ friendship is that sense of respect and connection between equals.” PNG is also the largest recipient of Australian aid, worth $602 million in 2022-2023, and making up more than 30 per cent of Australian aid to the Pacific region.Last month Mr Marape moved to highlight the low risk of energy investment in PNG. Gas giant Santos, with multinational partners TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil, are behind the $US10 billion Papua LNG project, with expected capacity of 6 million tonnes a year.potential green hydrogen investments.
The Refugee Action Coalition called on Mr Albanese to use the visit to resettle about 90 refugees and asylum seekers sent to PNG by Australia for offshore processing.
