Labor’s much-anticipated pay deal for more than 160,000 federal government workers would be the largest increase in a decade, but could spur inflation. auspol

The Albanese government is offering more than 160,000 public sector workers a 10.5 per cent pay rise over three years in negotiations that could have ramifications for inflation.

The public sector pay negotiations are the first since the Albanese government was elected last year and are taking place amid concerns wage rises that are too high could derail forecasts of falling inflation.Advertisement Under the offer, an APS employee who earns a salary of $95,873 would receive a total pay increase of $10,421 over three years, taking their annual salary to $106,294.The CPSU’s frontloaded pay claims include 9 per cent in the first year, 6 per cent in the second year and 5 per cent in the third.CPSU national secretary Melissa Donnelly said members’ votes and feedback “will inform next steps for the union and our bargaining team”.

But she welcomed the government’s “genuine negotiations” as “a far cry from where we were just a year ago”. Supporting this is a forecast decline in the Consumer Price Index to 3.25 per cent over 2023-24, decreasing further to 2.5 per cent over 2025-26.
