The prime minister, governor-general and acting UK high commissioner have been invited to the funeral, despite a warning that only one representative per country can attend | KnottMatthew
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Governor-General David Hurley have been cleared to fly on the government’s VIP jet to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, even as world leaders were formally requested to take commercial flights to London.
Anthony Albanese says plans are being finalised on helping Pacific leaders get to London for the Queen’s funeral. The UK has made special efforts to ensure Australia is well represented at the funeral following the Albanese government’s offer to help Pacific Island leaders attend the event, including by organising special Royal Australian Air Force flights for them to London.
The heads of most Commonwealth nations are expected to attend as well as overseas monarchs such Spain’s King Felipe and his wife Queen Letizia. Emperor Naruhito of Japan has confirmed his attendance. Speaking at Parliament House on Monday, Albanese said the government was finalising logistics with the RAAF and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade about transporting Pacific leaders to London.
Stressing that some of the countries involved are “very small island nations”, Albanese said the government was working closely with New Zealand on the issue.
