Qantas chief Alan Joyce will leave his job two months earlier than expected, after a recent furore over the national airline's profits and service.

Mr Joyce said he will leave the post he has held since 2008 "to help the company accelerate its renewal".

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is taking court action after the carrier allegedly advertised tickets for flights that had already been cancelled.“In the last few weeks, the focus on Qantas and events of the past make it clear to me that the company needs to move ahead with its renewal as a priority," Joyce said in a statement.

Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder said Joyce had "always had the best interests of Qantas front and centre".
