The Calgary Catholic School District said Wednesday that principals at every school use the air-quality index to restrict or cancel outdoor activities on a case-by-case basis.Article content In a statement online, the Calgary Board of Education said it also uses the air-quality index when determining what kinds of activities should be outdoors. On Tuesday, the board said schools were asked to restrict outdoor activity.
“Similar to humans, their respiratory systems can be affected,” said Whiteside. “And we have bird species, which are much more attuned to changes in air quality compared to mammals, so we’re really monitoring our birds to make sure they’re not showing any signs of compromise.”
