Sydney awoke to a blanket of smoke on Monday morning as hazard reduction burns continue across both the city’s north and south.

Residents in Sydney’s eastern suburbs are being advised to stay indoors as much as possible after hazard reduction burns caused a major drop in air quality across the city on Monday morning.

The Rural Fire Service issued an update about 5.30am, warning asthma sufferers to have their puffers handy throughout the day.“Smoke from hazard reduction burns conducted around Sydney yesterday has settled across the broad area overnight,” the advisory said. “If you feel that the air in your home is uncomfortable, consider going to a place with cleaner air if it is safe to do so,” the website advises for those in Sydney’s east. For the rest of the city, outdoor physical activity is not recommended for anyone experiencing a cough or shortness of breath as a result of the smoke, and windows and doors should be closed.
