Air-quality advisories have been issued for the Cowichan Valley and the Port Alberni area by the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with Island Health.

The advisories are in place due to high concentrations of fine particulate matter, which tend to be at their highest around neighbourhoods with residential wood stoves, busy roads and industrial operations.Exposure to fine particulate matter is a particular concern for people with such chronic conditions as asthma, heart disease and diabetes, and such respiratory conditions as COVID-19.

Pregnant women, infants and older adults should also take care, and those with chronic conditions should postpone or reduce strenuous exercise. Symptoms of exposure can include eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath and coughing. Air cleaners like HEPA filters can reduce particulate levels indoors. If wood stoves or fireplaces are the only source of heat in a residence, emissions can be reduced by burning dry wood and making sure there is enough air for proper combustion.
