World Vision is the latest of several international aid organisations to temporarily suspend its operations in Afghanistan as it works out how the Taliban’s ban on female NGO workers will affect its Afghanistan programs. 7NEWS

It comes days after the administration ordered universities to close to women, prompting global condemnation and sparking some protests and heavy criticism inside Afghanistan.National Director of World Vision Afghanistan Asuntha Charles said the ban on female workers was not in the interest of the Afghan people, many of whom are facing famine

““With the current humanitarian crisis gripping all of Afghanistan, we need more people working in NGOs to help alleviate the situation here, not less.“Every individual, regardless of gender, should have the same opportunity to work for humanitarian aid and development organisations, or any industry.”

She said the government’s decision would disproportionately affect women and girls who faced restrictions under the country’s rules and cultural customs that largely prevent male workers from delivering aid to female beneficiaries. “Women and girls who benefit from gender and culturally sensitive NGO programming will be disproportionately affected by this decision. “Credit:UN deputy special representative for Afghanistan and humanitarian co-ordinator Ramiz Alakbarov told Reuters although the UN had not received the order, contracted NGOs carried out most of its activities and would be heavily impacted.
