The biggest sticking point in the negotiations appears to be pay increases and give them credit for not pretending it is about something else, because it is always about the money. From jerryagar1010: Cut federal staff before raising wages
“That bigger-than-ever federal bureaucracy is costing Canadians a bundle. Federal employee compensation rose from $38 billion in 2015 to $58 billion in 2021 — a whopping 52% increase.”Are we better off?wrote: “Yet this growth has not led to a higher standard of living — Canada’s per capita economic growth has been among the weakest among OECD countries since 2015.
Outsourcing increased to $14.6 billion, 74% higher than when the Liberals promised in 2015 to cut back on the use of external consultants.”If we’re not better off with the explosion in public employment, let’s fire 20% of the employees.Would most Canadians notice they are gone? We didn’t notice better government when they got hired. After that, take the money saved and use some or all of it to give raises to the people still employed.
Any public employee demanding an increase in pay, absent a coincidental lowering of government expense, is telling the private sector that we have to get along with less money so they can have more. It is past time for a rightsizing of all levels of government, which would allow for better pay for those we do need.
