The international port in Batam continues to be used to send undocumented migrant workers. It takes cooperation with the local government of origin of migrant workers to deal with this problem.

PANDU WIYOGA

The Head of Public Relations at the Riau Islands Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Zahwani Pandra Arsyad, said on Friday that this case started when immigration officers refused three people from crossing from Harbour Bay Port, Batam to Puteri Harbour, Malaysia on August 8th. The officers were suspicious that these people were potential undocumented migrant workers.

According to Pandra, the three undocumented migrant worker candidates came from Tasikmalaya and Subang, West Java. In addition to rescuing the three undocumented migrant worker candidates, the police also arrested two suspects with the initials MR and MS . Both of them reside in Batam. This was revealed in the incident of the sinking of a migrant worker boat in the Malacca Strait on August 15th. The boat was carrying 14 Indonesian citizens from Melaka, Malaysia, to Rupat Island, Riau.
