PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) was found to be less than effective in its management of agricultural import activities.

According to the 2018 Auditor-General’s Report Series 3, screening tests were not done regularly and delayed lab reports made it difficult for Maqis to ensure that the imported consignments were safe and of good quality.

“Based on the audit’s view, the safety and quality of import control could not be measured as there were no targets fixed for the screening tests, ” said the report released on Tuesday .Maqis also did not take further actions on laboratory results of the screening tests done as the reports would simply be submitted to various agencies for further action.

It also found that visual or physical inspections were low in frequency and inspection charges were also not imposed on consignments other than fish, causing the government to lose out on revenue. “Visual and physical inspections on imported agricultural consignments were not done regularly due to the lack of manpower and also heavy workload."
