KINGSTON — After half a century of talking about it, the city opened a new bridge across the Cataraqui River Tuesday afternoon.

“Bridges have a way, and have always been a symbol of unity and connection. They demonstrate our ability to bring people and places together,” Kingston and the Islands MP Mark Gerretsen said, adding that the new bridge honours the city’s Indigenous community.“I see a lot of smiles on the faces around the room. Those smiles have been earned,” Kingston and the Islands MPP Ted Hsu said.
Peter Huigenbos, the city’s commissioner of business, environment and projects, thanked city staff and the contractors who worked to build the bridge during the past three years. As the ceremony’s final speaker, Huigenbos summed up many people’s sentiment and excitement about the day.As part of Tuesday’s festivities, following a ceremony and the community centre, there was a ribbon cutting at the east end of the span and winners of a fundraising auction that raised more than $6,300 for the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington were the first to cross the bridge after it was officially opened.
