Essendon haven’t given up on selecting retiring veteran Dyson Heppell but coach Brad Scott has committed to picking his best available side while they can still make the finals.
Scott said Weideman has been in strong VFL form playing as a key defender and they wanted another taller defender to match up with the Swans tall forwards. Essendon’s hopes of toppling Sydney received a major boost on Thursday when star Swans midfielder Chad Warner was ruled out with a calf injury. Until Isaac Heeney and Warner came to the rescue, Sydney were staring down the barrel of a sixth loss in seven games to potentially fall from the top of the ladder.
“They’re pretty strong in the contest, Sydney are always like that, but we’re looking to put them away when the game’s there.”
