Former AFL star Wayne Carey has weighed in on the brutal treatment Swans champion Lance 'Buddy' Franklin received from Collingwood fans over the weekend.
Franklin was loudly booed by sections of Collingwood Magpies fans who made up the majority of the 71,000-strong crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Carey – a former North Melbourne star – slammed those suggestions and pointed out several other players in the AFL are regularly booed without getting as much support. The father-of-two is widely viewed as one of the best athletes to play in the AFL and one of the greatest of the 21st century with more than 1,000 goals at Sydney and Hawthorn.
“The Sydney Swans are extremely disappointed by the repeated booing of Lance Franklin in Sunday’s match at the MCG. Lance is a champion and his contribution to the AFL should be celebrated and respected,” the statement read. Collingwood captain Darcy Moore, coach Craig McRae and CEO Craig Kelly quickly acted and were the first to release a statement apologising to Franklin.
“We hope the next time we get the chance to witness a champion of the game we treat them with respect, the same respect we ask for when it comes to our players and our champions.”
