In Extra-Ordinary Things, the ABC News Breakfast sports reporter sets out to find objects from the past that illustrate Australia’s unique history.
Throughout this new factual series, host Tony Armstrong makes his arrival on a fold-up bike. It’s a device of Mr Bean-worthy irritation, and Armstrong dashes off an exasperated commentary to the too-small contraption. It’s a very ABC image: idiosyncratic, budget-conscious and, most of all, geographically diverse. While it boasts a partnership with Canberra’s National Museum of Australia,gets out to its subjects.
The humble ute, you learn, was an Australian invention from the 1930s, and there are pockets of illuminating information seeded throughout the episodes that are matched to archival information and period ABC footage. But the show is always on the lookout for an emotional angle, and to its credit, knows when to let the moment be.
