The province’s new housing legislation is receiving more criticism from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario ., they argued that Bill 23 – theof 1.5-million new homes over the next decade. By increasing the housing supply, officials hope to bring prices down.the extra charges that municipalities lay on developers. The AMO argued that these funds are typically used to connect roads, transit and other kinds of infrastructure to the residential areas being built.

The group claimed that slashing the charges would cost Ontario’s cities and towns around $5.1-billion. TheyWith less money going into the public coffers, the AMO argued local governments would need to either raise property taxes or cut public services.“[The bill] has proposed numerous changes to the Planning Act and Development Charges Act that, if passed, will significantly impact how municipal governments plan for, and recover the costs associated with growth,” said Regional Chair John Henry.
