As recently as December’s online meeting on health care, the premiers reiterated their push for the federal government to boost its share of funding through the Canada Health Transfer to 35 per cent of costs and to increase that amount by six per cent annually following the initial hike. The Nova Scotia government budgeted $5.7 billion for health care for the 2022-23 fiscal year, nearly 44 per cent of its overall spending estimate. While 44 cents of every dollar the province spends goes to health care, the federal government funnelled $1.2 billion of the province’s $5.7 billion health-care budget through the federal health transfer.

“What we’re looking at is an increase in the Canada Health Transfer generally and then then looking to strike bilateral accords with each province, similar to what the child-care agreements looked like,” Blois said. “We want accountability, we want access to primary care, shorter wait times,” Thompson said. “We want to be a partner to that and we need help. That’s the primary message, we expect them to give us a hand and we’ll use that money wisely and we’re willing to be accountable to them. The federal government stated previously that its priorities include:improving access to primary care with reforms and more doctors, changing the way health-care data is shared within provinces and across the country.

“We need to consult all of the stakeholders, make sure we get all the right people in the room and develop a plan that will live longer than the government, potentially, a plan that has funding. “For example, the emergency department backlog,” Hawker said “A lot of its inflow issue is based on the number of people seeking emergency department care because they don’t have any other timely access to primary care services.Doctors Nova Scotia, which has 3,500 members who serve as practising physicians, residents, retired physicians and medical students, endorses the health-home model, Hawker said.
