When my neighbours and myself spoke up about the frequent assaults, thefts and vandalism, encampment supporters told us to shut up
I first noticed how encampment supporters intimidate and silence crime victims when I lived in Toronto’s gay village. Neighbourhood crime, which had been steadily worsening for years, spiked during the pandemic, and local residents, myself included, often felt unsafe due to frequent assaults, thefts and vandalism. When we spoke up about this, encampment supporters told us to shut up.
When she spoke up about neighbourhood violence — such as sharing her assailant’s photo on Facebook or participating in a local news segment about the issue — encampment supporters responded by threatening to assault or kill her. One pro-encampment activist said he would cave her face in with his fist.
